Movado Watches: The Signature Features of a High End Timepiece

By : james oates

There are some things in this life that simply cannot be imitated. No musician will ever again play the guitar with the same technical prowess and outright ferocity as Jimi Hendrix. No author will ever capture the violence and loneliness lurking under the surface of everyday life in quite the same way as Raymond Carver. No voice will ever ring in your ears with the same mixture of melancholy and joy as the voice of someone you love.

Just as those things and a thousand more are special and unique, so are the qualities of the inimitable Movado brand of watches. Movado watches have long been in the upper echelon of fine watches, distinguished and recognized all around the world for their signature “Movado dot.” The Movado dot is so legendary, in fact, that it has a place in the Museum of Modern Art right in the heart of New York City.

To this day, Movado continues to break new ground while keeping a link to their storied and celebrated past. Here are a few examples of the watches Movado is offering today, as well as a little insight into what makes them tick.

Movado Men’s Black Dial with Gold Plated Case & Stainless Steel Watch

As with every Movado watch, this style’s distinctive touch is the plain black dial with the signature dot located right at the 12 o’clock position. It has a gold-plated circular case and gold-plated minute and second hands. The bracelet itself is stainless steel and utilizes a deployant clasp.

The shocking thing about this watch isn’t its glorious simplicity and remarkable style. They are qualities common to every Movado watch. But this particular version is also water resistant at up to 100 feet. Looking good isn’t enough for the designers at Movado. They insist that their timepieces are durable as well.

Movado Men’s S.E. Silver Dial Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch

While most of Movado’s watches stick with an all-black dial, everyone now and again they will mix it up for a very special timepiece. The S.E. Silver is one of those rare and thrilling exceptions.

Instead of the black dial, this watch has an all-silver dial, which matches perfectly with the stainless steel case. It still has the Movado dot at 12:00, but there are also similar dots coordinated throughout other areas of the watch. Four dots rest on the case itself while other dots appear at the middle of the center links on the stainless steel bracelet.

The S.E. Silver is topped off with a push/pull crown and a hidden deployant clasp. The all-silver look of this unique watch will get you a slew of “Where’d you get that?” moments.

Movado Men’s Esperanza Pocket Stainless Steel Watch

When people think of Movado they always think quality production and gorgeous simplicity. One thing they may not think about, however, are pocket watches.

From their invention in the 16th century, pocket watches were the most common way for people to tell time for hundreds of years. Until the rise of the wristwatch after the First World War, pocket watches were normally worn attached to your belt loop or your lapel. Today, Movado is paying homage to the storied history and classic beauty of the pocket watch. But, of course, they are doing it on their own terms.

The stainless steel case of this watch surrounds the simple black dial with a Movado dot at 12:00. The stainless steel minute and hour hands tick away perfect time from the Swiss quartz movement. The case measures 40mm across so you and everyone else will get to take in all this watch’s glory. It comes with a stainless steel chain so that you can have it right on hand without worrying about it dropping to the ground or getting lost.

Movado Women’s Esperanza Collection Diamond Stainless Steel Watch

Another out of the ordinary option from Movado is the Diamond from their Esperanza Collection. The case of this beauty is encrusted with 20 sparkling and shining diamonds. The total weight of them adds up to right about 0.80 carat. They beautifully accentuate the gorgeous white mother-of-pearl dial.

Of course, the highlight of the dial is the Movado dot at 12:00, this time a subtle silver-tone color. The minute and hour hands beneath the sapphire crystal case are also silver-toned.

One of the most distinctive features of this watch, amazingly enough, is not actually the diamonds themselves. The strap of the watch is constructed of an unusual satin Bordeaux fabric. The fabric itself it cut in such a unique way that strips of it are left out, revealing the delicate features of your wrist. This watch is truly in a league all its own.

The things we encounter in our lifetimes that are one-of-a-kind should be admired with a certain sense of reverence. We will never find anything else like them, so we shouldn’t even try. So when you’re looking for a fine watch, accept no substitutes. Stick with Movado. Stick with the best.
