Yasmin Blood Clots

By : John Davidson

The British Medical Journal recently published a study that focused upon the likelihood that various birth control pills could lead to blood clots. The data in the study strongly suggests Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives carry a significantly higher risk of clotting than alternatives.

To place this into the proper context, all oral contraceptives that contain estrogen carry a risk of blood clotting. The study found that those who take birth control pills containing levonorgestrel and a small dosage of estrogen are four times as likely to develop blood clots as women who are not taking birth control. In comparison, women who are taking pills that contain drospirenone (the progestin in Yaz and Yazmin) are up to six times as likely to experience clotting.

These findings are significant. Not only do they imply an increased danger of developing blood clots, but the data also underscores possible negligence on the part of Yaz manufacturer Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.

Below, we’ll explore the link between Yasmin birth control and the heightened risk of blood clots. I’ll explain how women taking Yaz can potentially develop deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. We’ll also take a look at why a growing number of women are filing Yaz lawsuits.

Yasmin Deep Vein Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism

Blood clotting is your body’s mechanism for controlling bleeding; it is a natural component of your body’s healing process. However, irregular clotting can lead to potentially life-threatening conditions.

Many women who have taken Yasmin birth control have developed blood clots within the deep veins of their arms, legs, and pelvis. This condition is known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. If the clots become large enough, they can restrict the flow of your blood, or block it entirely. Because deep veins carry most of your blood, DVT is often dangerous. If the veins become restricted, they will lose their ability to funnel your blood through major arteries.

Abnormal clotting from Yaz oral contraceptives can lead to a further complication. If a blood clot detaches itself from the wall of a deep vein, it will travel with the bloodstream. When this happens, the traveling clot (called an embolus) can become lodged within the pulmonary artery, starving the lung of oxygen. This is known as pulmonary embolism. It is potentially fatal.

Yasmin-Induced Menstrual Clotting

Taking Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives can also cause menstrual clotting. While this type of clotting is seldom as dangerous as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, it may suggest a deeper medical issue.

Yaz Lawsuits Allege Negligence

An increasing number of women are filing Yasmin lawsuits that claim Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals was negligent in numerous ways. They allege that the drug manufacturer was aware of the heightened danger of blood clotting and other serious side effects, yet did not adequately saren consumers. The lawsuits also claim that Bayer’s misleading advertisements wrongly positioned the oral contraceptives as superior to other birth control pills.

Women who are normally healthy have developed dangerous side effects after having taken Yasmin and Yaz. If you have experienced Yasmin-induced deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or menstrual clotting, contact a Yaz lawyer. It may be time to hold Bayer accountable.
